It’s pretentious, cringey, nonsensical, and so far up its own ass, yet it’s also honest and heartfelt in what it wants to be, and we need more games like that in the triple-A space. Death Stranding 2 could enhance everything its sibling managed to achieve or result in something entirely unique, and I’m more than ready for either of those possibilities.
Released in 1995, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a point-and-click adventure set in a nightmarish apocalyptic future. Here, only a handful of people have been kept alive by a malignant genius artificial intelligence that seeks to torture and humiliate them endlessly. Players have to deal with disturbing ethical dilemmas that revolve around themes of genocide, abuse, insanity, and r
Later, the AI argues that a digital age also promotes misinformation, suggesting ideas go through a process of natural selection in the same way genes do. The problem arises that most people prefer information that confirms their existing views, and therefore select only for those views regardless of their validity. It summates this as a world where "no one is invalidated, but nobody is right." Some have likened this part of MGS2 to the creation of echo-chambers on social media, wherein communities are made up of people who agree on issues. This leads to things like arguments over fake news, which has cropped up more often in recent ye
The original Death Stranding follows the story of Sam Bridges, portrayed by Reedus, as he seeks to connect the disparate parts of a post-apocalyptic United States. He does so by delivering packages on foot, by vehicle, or through many other devices. While there is a bizarre story tying it all together, the majority of the gameplay is centered on this concept. The themes of bringing people together was largely supported by Death Stranding's multiplayer component which had players from all over the world working together to build structu
Released in 2019, Death Stranding was the first game from Kojima Productions following Hideo Kojima's split from Konami . Both its gameplay and story were markedly different from Metal Gear Solid , moving to a post-apocalyptic walking simulator rather than a military sci-fi stealth game. Where MGS focused on political and militarist themes, Death Stranding was more concerned with human stories around themes of loneliness and ident

A charismatic man who tried to reform the world around him and live free by his ‘code’, Dutch was also addicted to needing to be great and would at times compromise his values to uphold his so-called ideals. Dutch possessed the understanding that change is simply inevitable and that he would be condemned to fighting

Kojima Productions ' games have offered thoughtful critiques of sociological and political ideas in ways that many modern titles rarely achieve, let alone ones from over two decades ago. Themes in those early games were already interesting when first explored, yet became increasingly relevant as time went on. Before the studio had its current name, this was limited to the Metal Gear Solid franchise, but as Hideo Kojima has moved on to other projects, he has maintained a knack for almost clairvoyant storytell
Lisa Unger is seen in Death Stranding in a horrific state of experimental procedures. Lisa Unger is on life support, in a permanent coma to keep her from dying, and eventually necrotizing. Kojima and Reedus are just guys being dudes. Absolute besties sitting five feet apart in the green room because they’re not gay. Their friendship has been a sweet side effect of Death Stranding, with the duo clearly having a blast creating a project they’re both enamoured with. Deep down it’s all a bunch of melodramatic, nonsensical bullshit, but the creative vision at the game’s core is so unapologetic that it’s no surprise the studio’s debut has been such a success. If I could make a game with all of my celebrity friends I would, so good on Kojima.
